Subject: Karate, to me, as a Christian
Dear Rick,
My name is Zen Miles and I am a church-going Christian who, a few years ago, was attending a Karate academy for leisure. I have only just today read your article written at an unknown date regarding Karate as a tool for evanglical ministry within the Christian church. Your article focuses heavily upon the meditation aspect of eastern martial arts, and as such you are assuming that the meditation involved is used in a spiritual fashion.
As a primary point to remember, not all martial arts masters connect Zen Buddhism with martial arts. You have stated in your article that the masters you contacted identify with Zen Buddhism as evident in their martial arts. I would like you to know that it is widely unknown as to whether Zen Buddhism has any connection with Karate or any other eastern martial art.
Secondly, the meditation used in Karate is used soley for the purpose of physical calm (breathing and heartrate), and not in the sleightest bit oriented towards attaining "inner peace". It is recognised by those studying eastern martial arts (from an unbiased viewpoint) that, if Zen meditation has any bearing on meditation within Karate, it is for the sole purpose of physical calm and reflection upon one's own training.
Therefore, as I maintain that it takes all types to evangelise to all types, Karate can be used for an evangelical purpose, not only for the youth to participate in, but also to reach those without the salvation of Christ within the Karate club which one is connected to. I look forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Zen.
